SC refuses to accept settlements in grave criminal cases

SC: Cases of grave offence can’t be quashed on basis of compromise

In a bench of Justices from the Supreme Court, the verdict of a Gujarat HC was set aside, which was a case of suicide, filed by the deceased cousin. This action was taken forward because the complainant decided to settle the case through monetary means with the alleged perpetrator. The SC strictly dismissed the idea of a dire case being settled with the means of money, as it no longer associates just with the complainant and the victim, but also comes under the careful interest of the whole nation. The Court further stated that if such an action be passed casually, it will then encourage other complainants to come in with trivial complaints in an attempt to suck out money from the process; meanwhile all wealthy offenders will then have a chance to walk away freely.
