The Gambia mass deaths of children under the ages of five, starting from July to October, created a stir in the medical industry, specifically India, when it was alleged that the cough syrups made by Delhi-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd. were the cause. However, Gambia’s Medicines Control Agency still hasn’t come to a conclusion if the said syrups, which have high amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, were the culprit, saying that many kids died even without the consumption of the same. Investigations of the kids having acute kidney injuries are still ongoing.
