Hillary Clinton, in her 2012 tweet, talked about a personal hero of hers, who was none other than Indian entrepreneur Ela Bhatt, who started an organization called SEWA (Self-Employed Women’s Association), wherein she lent poor women small loans to feed their families in the absence of their husbands. Clinton and Bhatt stayed in touch upon meeting for the first time, and the org became 2 million strong the second time she visited, which she says has been “ahead of its time”. Bhatt’s organization also helps women read and give lessons on small business making.
