Israel Detects 1st Monkeypox Case in 2023 Despite Vaccination

Israel has detected a case of monkeypox disease for the first time in 2023, according to the country’s Health Ministry. The patient is a man in his 50s who had recently traveled from Portugal to Israel. The Ministry noted that he had already been vaccinated against the virus, but still contracted the disease. It explained that vaccinated individuals can still get infected if they are surrounded by people with a high viral load. An epidemiological investigation revealed that no others had contact with the man and were exposed to the virus. The Ministry advised anyone who returned from abroad with a fever and blistering rash to seek medical assistance. In 2022, Israel reported 262 cases of monkeypox between May and October, but no other cases have been reported since then until this recent one.
