Afghan Supreme Leader Claims Women Saved from Oppression by Taliban

Afghanistan’s supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, has issued a statement on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, asserting that Afghan women are being saved from traditional oppressions and their status as free and dignified human beings has been restored under the Taliban’s Islamic governance. However, the United Nations has expressed deep concern over the deprivation of women’s rights in Afghanistan and warned of systematic gender apartheid. Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, they have imposed strict restrictions on women’s activities, including banning them from attending schools and working for NGOs. They have also deprived women of their rights to inheritance and divorce. Despite Akhundzada’s claims of taking necessary steps for the betterment of women, the international community remains skeptical about the true conditions faced by Afghan women in the country under Taliban rule.
