White House National Security Council (NSC) Coordinator for Strategic Communications, John Kirby said that it is up to India to make its own choices regarding cutting down Russian oil imports. Kirby expressed hope that India would continue to purchase Russian oil at or below the price cap, as it has been doing. Last year, the United States and its allies imposed a European ban and price limit on Russian oil in an effort to restrict its revenues. The cap stipulates that seaborne oil from Russia must not exceed $60 per barrel. Kirby also highlighted the significant role India plays in solving global problems, as President Biden emphasized during Modi’s visit to the US. Kirby’s remarks reaffirm previous statements that India has the freedom to decide on purchasing Russian oil while adhering to the price cap.
