The Justice Department has asked a judge to postpone the criminal trial of former President Donald Trump until December. The trial, which was initially set for August, involves 37 felony counts against Trump for illegally hoarding classified documents and obstructing the Justice Department’s efforts to retrieve them. Prosecutors with special counsel Jack Smith’s team have requested the trial to be rescheduled for December 11. This delay is necessary as Trump’s lawyers need to obtain security clearances and review the evidence related to the case. The Justice Department has already started sharing evidence with Trump’s legal team. However, they believe additional time is reasonable and appropriate for the defense counsel to review and digest the discovery. Trump’s lawyers have no objections to pushing the trial date back. The judge will ultimately decide the trial date.
