An Indian NHS psychiatrist, Dr Kabir Garg, and a British teacher with past India stints, Matthew Smith, have been convicted in separate cases related to child sexual abuse. Dr Kabir Garg, 33, was sentenced to six years in jail for his involvement in running a child sex abuse website called ‘The Annex’. The website had 90,000 members worldwide and facilitated the sharing of child abuse material. Garg, being one of the administrators, was responsible for enforcing site rules and advising on sharing child sexual abuse images. When arrested, he was logged into his moderator account. The arrest was made following investigations by the National Crime Agency (NCA) which uncovered over 7,000 indecent images and videos in Garg’s possession. Matthew Smith, 34, a former British deputy head teacher, was found guilty of paying and instructing teenagers in India to sexually assault children and send him images of these encounters. Smith had child sex abuse websites open on his computer and his devices yielded over 1.2 lakh indecent images. NCA investigators discovered that he had paid two teenagers in India £65k (approximately Rs 68 lakh) over a five-year period to abuse children in India. Smith had worked in orphanages and NGOs across India between 2007 and 2014. The cases highlight the shocking reality of child sexual exploitation and the need for stringent action against perpetrators.
