Apple growers in Washington state celebrate as India lifts retaliatory tariffs

India recently lifted its retaliatory tariff on U.S. products such as apples, lentils, and chickpeas, bringing relief to apple growers in Washington state. The tariffs imposed by India in 2017 had significantly impacted the small farms in the state, resulting in a decline in exports from 8 million boxes per year to $760,000 by 2022. However, after lobbying efforts by U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, India finally lifted the tariffs, allowing Washington state growers to regain access to the Indian market. The move is seen as a positive development for the farmers, who can now anticipate increased sales and revenue. Robison Orchards, a third-generation farm, had suffered huge losses due to the tariffs and is now looking forward to rebuilding its presence in the Indian market. The farm owner, Dave Robison, expressed his happiness with this year’s crop and the good news of the lifted tariffs. Senator Cantwell believes that the lifting of the tariffs will not only benefit the apple growers but will also open up opportunities for partnerships between India and Washington state. She also mentioned the opening of a Consulate Office in Seattle, further facilitating cooperation between the two regions.
