US-based Juniper Networks aims to provide high-bandwidth connectivity across airports as part of their captive 5G network offering. The company believes that next-generation technology, such as AI-backed high-performance IT infrastructure, will play a crucial role in the aviation sector. Sajan Paul, Managing Director & Country Manager, India & SAARC at Juniper Networks, revealed that they are currently in talks with several large airport operators and are exploring multiple areas of partnership, including relevant applications, business optimisation using next-generation technology, and technology assessment.
According to Paul, Indian companies have the ambition to build their private 5G infrastructure similar to a telecom carrier. A captive or private 5G network is an extension of wireless technology that creates a dedicated local area network within a specific business facility or premise, with restrictions on offering services outside of that area.
Paul believes that private 5G networks, backed by fibre-based networks, would be ideal for airports. Applications such as baggage and security checks, terminal access, and air traffic centres require unlimited bandwidth, which can be provided by a private 5G network.
Juniper Networks sees Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Washington as an encouragement for US-based companies like theirs. The joint statement by India and the US emphasized the role of technology in deepening their partnership and committing to policies that facilitate technology sharing and co-development opportunities.
Paul also highlighted Juniper Networks’ investments in India, including the development of make-in-India software and the commissioning of one of the largest data centres in Karnataka. The company aims to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2025.
In terms of 5G, Paul mentioned that Juniper Networks is one of the serious IP players globally and that the technology presents significant opportunities for telecom network operators in industries such as mining, manufacturing, port management, and airport operations.
Overall, Juniper Networks is positioning itself as a leader in providing high-bandwidth connectivity and AI-backed IT infrastructure for the aviation sector, paving the way for enhanced operational efficiency and innovation in airports.
