Speculation Mounts Over Ministerial Shake-Up Ahead of PM Modi’s Council of Ministers Meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to chair a meeting of the council of ministers on July 3, fueling speculation about a possible ministerial shake-up. This comes in the wake of recent discussions held between PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, and a senior functionary from the RSS. The meeting has raised expectations of changes within both the government and the BJP organization, as the leadership aims to retool them ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The buzz about the impending changes has been circulating, with assumptions that the leadership may want to strategize and regroup in the face of changing political equations and the formation of a combined front by opposition parties. However, sources caution against making any conclusions at this stage, stating that the participants have much to consider. PM Modi has previously emphasized the need to restructure the National Democratic Alliance, the BJP-led coalition, and the party has been exploring the possibility of reconvening with old allies, such as the Telugu Desam Party and Shiromani Akali Dal, as well as local political outfits from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The return of these parties is expected to precede the cabinet reshuffle, which is said to be the final one of this government. With state elections scheduled at the end of the year in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, followed by the Lok Sabha polls next year, the timing of these changes is crucial for the BJP. Additionally, there is speculation that Chirag Paswan might be included in the Union ministry. Shiv Sena, currently unrepresented in the Union ministry, is also likely to be included. Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde is expected to meet senior BJP leaders in the national capital. The party leadership also faces organizational issues in various states, including Karnataka, where the leader of the opposition in the assembly has not yet been appointed, and there are expectations of a change in the state president position.
