The mayor of a suburb of Paris said on Sunday that protesters had rammed a burning car into his home and then set the vehicle on fire, injuring his wife and one of his children, as violent demonstrations across France over the police killing of a 17-year-old stretched into a fifth night. Vincent Jeanbrun, the mayor of L’Hay-les-Roses, tweeted that ‘Last night, a milestone was reached in terms of horror and ignominy.’ Police also reported rioters attempting to set fire to a car belonging to another mayor in the town of La Riche. Despite this, overall violence appeared to lessen compared to previous nights, with 719 arrests made nationwide. The ongoing crisis has posed a new challenge to President Macron’s leadership, exposing deep-seated discontent in low-income neighborhoods regarding discrimination and lack of opportunities. Macron’s state visit to Germany was postponed due to the unrest.
