Nick Kyrgios Tempers Wimbledon Expectations with Fitness Still a Concern

Last year’s Wimbledon runner-up, Nick Kyrgios, has expressed his cautious approach to the Grand Slam tournament due to his recent knee injury. Following surgery and a disappointing comeback match defeat, the Australian tennis player admits to having certain doubts about his fitness. Kyrgios recognizes the variations in his preparations compared to the previous year when he had a more ideal buildup. Nevertheless, he refuses to discredit the hard work he has put in over the past six months. Despite hitting the court with quality players and feeling better physically, Kyrgios is taking a day-by-day approach and avoiding setting unrealistic expectations. As one of the favorites in last year’s Wimbledon final, losing to Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios describes the disappointment of missing opportunities to play singles matches earlier this year. Preparing for Wimbledon, he reveals that his body was not yet ready due to a foot injury sustained during a car theft incident, which also caused him to miss the French Open. Kyrgios would have preferred additional match practice prior to the Grand Slam, but acknowledges the limitations of his current physical condition. He emphasizes the importance of not overexerting himself and striving for a balance between preparation and recovery. Kyrgios is scheduled to face David Goffin in the opening round of Wimbledon, where his performance will be closely watched considering his recent injury concerns.
