France Fines Google for Incomplete Search Engine and App Store Results

French authorities have imposed a two-million-euro ($2.2-million) fine on Google for incomplete results in its search engine and app store. The Competition, Consumer and Anti-Fraud Office stated that Google’s search engine lacks information regarding the ranking criteria of results. Specifically, searches for tourism accommodation did not provide explanations for prices. The Google Play Store also lacked information on ranking criteria, payment details, dispute resolution procedures, and reasons for not publishing user reviews of apps. The anti-fraud office mentioned that Google has since corrected part of the issues. However, a Google spokesperson expressed regret that the changes were not taken into account by the agency. The spokesperson emphasized that Google has always been transparent with users about how its products work and is open to constructive collaboration with French and European regulators.
