Close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit, the Indian consulate in San Francisco was allegedly vandalised by Khalistani separatists, drawing a sharp condemnation from the United States.’The US strongly condemns the reported vandalism and attempted arson against the Indian Consulate in San Francisco on Saturday. Vandalism or violence against diplomatic facilities or foreign diplomats in the US is a criminal offense,’ said US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. The incident was quickly addressed by the San Francisco Fire Department, with no major damage or injuries reported. The Indian mission in the US immediately raised the matter with the State Department.’In New Delhi, India summoned Canadian High Commissioner Cameron MacKay on Monday to convey concerns ahead of protests by pro-Khalistan terrorist groups outside the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, and two consulates in Toronto and Vancouver on July 8. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the Khalistani movement and the Indian government’s efforts to counter its influence. The Khalistanis, who advocate for an independent Sikh state in India’s Punjab region, have faced growing scrutiny and condemnation from the Indian government. The recent incident in San Francisco serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by Indian diplomatic missions abroad and the need for strong international cooperation in addressing such issues. India has urged partner countries, including Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia, to not provide space or support to the Khalistanis, as their radical and extremist ideology is detrimental to bilateral relations and security. The Indian government has also expressed concern over the presence of pro-Khalistan posters at rallies in Canada, indicating ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the issue and seek cooperation from partner countries in addressing the threat posed by Khalistani separatists.
