Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey has been invited to act as an international observer for the Presidential elections in Uzbekistan, which are scheduled to take place on Sunday. Leading a three-member team, Pandey will be overseeing the conduct of the elections. Uzbekistan adopted a new constitution after a referendum held in April, and this election will operate within the framework of the new constitution. The international community is closely observing the elections. In July 2023, Pandey and the Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan had a meeting to discuss electoral cooperation. The election commissioner also highlighted the recent elections conducted in India and explored avenues for enhancing ties between the two countries through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on electoral cooperation, training, and capacity building programs. Uzbekistan’s President is elected for a seven-year term from a single nationwide constituency. The country has an electorate of about 20 million, with each polling station catering to a maximum of 3000 voters. Over 22 million eligible voters are registered for the upcoming elections. Prior to the elections, the Indian delegation, including deputy election commissioners Hirdesh Kumar and R K Gupta, visited the 7th and 14th district election commissions to gain an overview of the electoral administration, procedures, and initiatives of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan. In addition, Pandey is scheduled to engage with the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) community based in Tashkent to discuss Indian elections.
