Visakhapatnam’s Population to Rise Sharply in the Next Decade, Predicts Research Centre

The Population Research Centre (PRC), based at the Andhra University campus in Visakhapatnam, has suggested that short and long-term plans need to be made on a war-footing to improve the infrastructure required for the people in the city. The PRC estimates that the population of Visakhapatnam will reach around 30 lakhs by 2033, making it the largest district in terms of population in the next decade. With the recent announcement that the administration of the State government will be shifted to Visakhapatnam from September, the population growth is expected to be even faster. This is likely to attract people from different parts of the state and other states for various needs like business, jobs, real estate investments, and education. Various authorities such as the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) should have completed plans and started the works for the next two or three decades instead of just one decade. The VDC suggests the creation of four satellite clusters in all four corners of the city, connected with major transport service lines to accommodate the future population growth. It is also important to complete massive irrigation projects like Polavaram to meet the water supply needs of the growing population. Visakhapatnam is expected to develop rapidly in the next decade, with IT industries coming up in Paradesipalem and Madhurawada areas. After the Global Investors’ Summit in the city last March, many investors are already showing interest in investing in Visakhapatnam.
