As open house on satcom spectrum allotment looms, Jio JV partner SES keeps mum on views

As the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) prepares to hold an open house session on the mode of spectrum allotment for broadband from space services in India, satellite player SES, a joint venture partner of Jio Platforms, has not participated in the ongoing consultation process. SES, based in Luxembourg, opposed auctioning of satellite spectrum in an earlier consultation and favored allotment via the administrative route. This stands in contrast to Jio Platforms’ strong push for spectrum allotment through auctions, citing the need for a level playing field and fair competition. Last year, Jio Platforms and SES formed a joint venture to deliver broadband services in India through satellites. The absence of SES from Trai’s current consultation process has raised eyebrows within the industry.
