Thailand’s PM Prayuth Chan-ocha announces retirement from politics

Thailand’s Prime Minister, Prayuth Chan-ocha, announced on Tuesday his retirement from politics, marking an end to his nine-year tenure in power. Prayuth, who came to power in a military coup, had been widely expected to step down after his military-backed party faced a significant defeat in the recent election. The United Thai Nation party, led by Prayuth, only managed to win 36 of the 500 house seats. As a result, Prayuth will remain the caretaker premier until a new government is formed.

During his announcement, Prayuth, a staunch royalist, expressed his belief that he has achieved many successes during his time as PM. He stated that he had worked hard to protect the nation, religion, and monarchy for the benefit of the people. Despite facing criticisms, Prayuth believes that his efforts have borne fruit for the public. He also emphasized that he had strived to strengthen the country for stability and peace, overcoming both domestic and international obstacles.

Throughout his tenure, Prayuth has endured various challenges, including court cases, house confidence votes, and street protests from his opponents. Many viewed him as an opportunist who lacked a public mandate. His government has faced intense criticism, particularly regarding its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and the economy. Thailand experienced its worst economic performance since the 1990s during his time in office.

Prayuth’s retirement announcement comes as the new parliament is set to convene for a vote to determine the next prime minister. It remains to be seen who will succeed Prayuth and lead Thailand into its next chapter.
