Constant search for excellence has been incredibly draining: R Ashwin

The constant search for excellence has pushed R Ashwin to new heights but by his own admission, it has also been incredibly draining. Ashwin, the world’s number one Test bowler, put the disappointment of being dropped from the World Test Championship final with a 33rd five-wicket haul in the first Test against the West Indies. The 36-year-old also became the third Indian to reach the 700-wicket milestone in international cricket and is only behind Harbhajan Singh (711 wickets) and Anil Kumble (956) in the all-time list. After the close of play on day one, Ashwin reflected on his long journey in international cricket and the ups and downs along the way, including the recent exclusion from the WTC final against Australia. Ashwin acknowledged that every cricketer goes through highs and lows and it is important to learn from the lows rather than sulk about them. He emphasized the constant search for excellence and how it has been both beneficial and draining. Ashwin also expressed his gratitude for the journey and the lessons it has taught him. He discussed his disappointment at being left out of the WTC final, but emphasized the importance of supporting the team and contributing in any way possible. Ashwin is now focused on creating great memories with his teammates and enjoying every moment of his career. He also mentioned that the COVID-19 pandemic has changed his outlook towards life and the game. In the first Test against the West Indies, Ashwin showcased his skills once again, making excellent use of the bounce on offer and achieving his 33rd five-wicket haul. He credited the team’s utilization of the conditions in the first session and expressed his satisfaction with their performance.
