Schools and Stock Market Closed as Hong Kong Braces for Typhoon Talim

Schools and the stock market in Hong Kong were closed on July 17 as Typhoon Talim approached the city. With rainy and windy weather expected, more than 100 people sought refuge at temporary shelters. Government and ferry services were halted and several events were postponed. The Hong Kong Observatory raised a No. 8 typhoon signal, the third-highest warning, indicating the typhoon’s approach. This was the first No. 8 signal to be hoisted this year. The weather forecaster expects Talim, with maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour, to pass within 300 kilometers to the south-southwest of Hong Kong on Monday morning. China’s National Meteorological Centre predicts that the typhoon will make landfall in the coastal regions of Guangdong province and Hainan province on Monday night, before entering the Gulf of Tonkin and making another landfall in the Guangxi region on Tuesday. Talim is then expected to weaken in Vietnam on Wednesday. In Hong Kong, 18 reports of fallen trees were received by the government. Residents were advised to stay away from the shoreline and avoid water sports activities, according to the observatory.
