H3N2-Driven Flu Cases Spike, Many Laid Low for 8-15 Days

After about a month of rain in Mumbai, doctors have observed a significant increase in patients presenting with flu-like illnesses. A high percentage of respiratory samples are testing positive for flu. Both adults and children are coming in with complaints of high fever, cold, cough, and in rare cases, stomach problems. The flu episodes are lasting from 8 to 15 days, leaving individuals weak and fragile. The predominant strain seems to be the influenza A virus subtype H3N2, but influenza B viruses are also circulating. Infectious disease experts are advising early treatment with oseltamivir to prevent complications. Oseltamivir should ideally be initiated within 48 hours of symptom onset. Starting early significantly reduces the recovery time. The flu this season is marked by high fever, with some patients even fainting. In March, there was a surge in H3N2 cases, which led to the first reported mortality in the state due to a combined infection of H3N2 and Covid-19. The flu season appears to be starting up again, with patients experiencing respiratory and gastric symptoms. Children have also been affected, with a 50% increase in pediatric patients. While most children recover in 5-7 days, many have a lingering cough for weeks. The upcoming weeks will determine if vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue will be more prevalent than viruses.
