Supreme Court sets hearing date for SNC-Lavalin corruption case against Kerala Chief Minister

The Supreme Court has listed the appeals in the SNC-Lavalin corruption case against the discharge of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for hearing on September 12. The case, which involves allegations of corruption and loss of ₹86.25 crore in a contract between Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and Lavalin, has faced repeated adjournments since January 2018. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an appeal against Vijayan’s discharge, arguing that he should face trial. However, two courts – a trial court and the Kerala High Court – have already discharged Vijayan of any wrongdoing. The CBI has been cautioned by the Supreme Court to present strong arguments in support of the appeal. The corruption case revolves around the contract between KSEB and Lavalin for the renovation and modernisation of hydroelectric projects in Idukki district of Kerala. Vijayan, who was the State’s Power Minister at the time, is alleged to have made a crucial decision to promote Lavalin from consultants to suppliers during his visit to Canada in 1997. The CBI contends that this decision was not correct and that Vijayan should stand trial. The case is scheduled for hearing on September 12.
