Moroccan defender Nouhaila Benzina has made history in the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. She appeared on the field wearing a hijab while playing against South Korea. Benzina becomes the first woman footballer to play in a senior-level global tournament wearing a hijab, after FIFA reversed the ban on wearing headscarves in matches for ‘health and safety reasons’ in 2014. Benzina plays professional club football for the ‘Association Sports of Forces Armées Royales’ in the top women’s league of Morocco.
