The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has closed its case against Adani Enterprises and the former chairman of the National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF) in relation to alleged irregularities in the award of a contract for supplying imported coal to the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation. The closure report has been filed before a special CBI court, and the court will now decide on the next course of action. The case was registered in 2020 based on a complaint from a senior official of the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. The CBI had also booked the former managing director of NCCF and a senior adviser in the case.

According to the CBI, the investigation revealed that the NCCF officials had engaged in post-tender negotiations with Adani Enterprises, providing the company with undue benefits even though it did not qualify for the tender. The agency had alleged that the NCCF violated guidelines in the tender process and favoured the Ahmedabad-based company. Adani Enterprises and the officials were charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating, and violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) had issued a limited tender enquiry for the supply of six lakh metric tonnes of imported coal to the Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Plant and the Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant. The CBI FIR stated that the tender process was conducted in 2010.

The closure of the case by the CBI raises questions about the outcome and the potential impact on the reputation of Adani Enterprises and its chairman, who have been under scrutiny for various allegations in recent years.
