The WHO will soon release the ‘Gujarat Declaration on Traditional Medicine’ which underlines the importance of traditional medicine for achieving the goal of universal health coverage, according to Union Ayush Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The declaration is a result of the first WHO Traditional Medicine Global Summit, which was held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat in August. The summit ended on a positive note, emphasising the recognition of traditional medicine for universal health coverage. The Government of India has acknowledged the declaration and promises complete cooperation with WHO. The global survey on traditional medicine conducted by WHO also indicates its increasing popularity worldwide. Out of 157-member states, 97 have national policies regarding traditional medicine. To expand the scope of Indian traditional medicine systems, India has initiated bilateral collaboration with Nepal, Cuba, Malaysia, Venezuela, and Qatar. India has invited these countries for bilateral meetings to share best practices in traditional medicine. The establishment of the Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in Gujarat’s Jamnagar and the hosting of the first global summit on traditional medicine in India are a result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. The outcomes of the summit are expected to significantly contribute to the formation of the ‘WHO TM Strategy 2025-34’ document. The G20 health ministers meeting has also recognized the summit’s importance. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus has highlighted India’s historic role and significance in the field of traditional medicine. The summit also included a digital exhibition organized by WHO and the Ministry of Ayush to showcase the work in traditional medicine from all six regions of WHO.
