Indian cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, has spoken about the competition for places in India’s potential World Cup 2023 squad ahead of the 5 September deadline. Currently in a pre-tournament camp near Bangalore, Sharma and his team are preparing for the Asia Cup, which begins on 30 August. During a press conference, Chairman of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee, Ajit Agarkar, suggested that the World Cup squad would largely remain the same as that of the Asia Cup. However, with the deadline approaching, Sharma will have the challenging task of dealing with players who won’t make the final cut.
Sharma expressed his empathy for those who may miss out, drawing on his own experience of not being selected for the 2011 World Cup. He remembered how former teammate, Yuvraj Singh, guided him through the disappointment and encouraged him to work hard and make a comeback. Since then, Sharma has become a standout performer for India in World Cups, finishing as the second-highest run-getter in 2015 and as the highest run-getter in 2019. Now as captain, Sharma is determined to replicate those performances and help India go one step further after two consecutive semi-final exits in the last two editions of the World Cup.
