A Pakistani doctor living in the US has been sentenced to 18 years in jail for attempting to provide material support to ISIS. The US Justice Department stated that Muhammad Masood, aged 31, had traveled to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport from Rochester, intending to board a flight to Los Angeles. Masood, a licensed doctor in Pakistan, had expressed his desire to join ISIS and conduct terrorist attacks in the US. He had purchased a plane ticket to Syria but was unable to go due to the pandemic. Instead, he planned to meet someone in Los Angeles who would assist him in traveling to ISIS territory via a cargo ship.
Masood was arrested by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force upon arrival at the airport in Minneapolis. Last year, he pleaded guilty to the charges of attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. On August 25, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
According to court documents, Masood had used an encrypted messaging application to facilitate his travel plans and express his allegiance to ISIS. He had also mentioned his desire to conduct lone wolf attacks in the US. Masood had previously worked as a research coordinator at a medical clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, under an H-1B visa.
The case was investigated by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. The prosecution was carried out by Assistant US Attorney Andrew R. Winter and Trial Attorney Dmitriy Slavin. The sentencing took place before Senior Judge Paul A Magnuson.
