The BMC in Mumbai may consider implementing a water cut if the stock in the seven lakes supplying water to the city do not fill to capacity by October 1. These lakes need to have 14.47 lakh million litres of water to fulfill the city’s needs until the next monsoons arrive. The civic hydraulic engineer, P Malwade, stated that a review of the water stocks will be taken on October 1 and if they have not filled up to the required quantity, a water cut may be imposed. The water stocks in the lakes as of September 2 stood at 13.12 lakh million litres or 91% of the required quantum. On July 1, the BMC had implemented a 10% water cut due to a delayed monsoon and inadequate water stocks, which was later withdrawn on August 8 when the total water stocks reached 81.4% of the required amount.
