The BJP has criticized Rahul Gandhi’s opposition to the idea of ‘one nation, one election’, calling it an attack on the Indian Union and all its states. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya stated that while Rahul Gandhi may be incapable of coming up with ideas that could help the country progress, the least he can do is not stand in the way of much-needed structural reforms. The BJP noted that Lok Sabha and Assembly polls were held together in the country till 1967 and the issue of simultaneous elections was debated when Indira Gandhi was the prime minister. Malviya pointed out that India started its electoral process in 1952 with simultaneous polls, which continued till 1967. He blamed the Congress for disrupting this arrangement with its opportunistic politics, resulting in a fractured election cycle for the country. Malviya questioned whether Rahul Gandhi was suggesting that Nehru, Indira, and several institutions of India have been undermining the idea of India and attacking the federal structure. He accused the Congress of thriving on divisions and conflicts for decades and claimed that anything that strives to unite the country would be unacceptable to them. Malviya stated that simultaneous polls are a bold idea that would further enrich and streamline India’s democratic processes, allowing more time for governance and development. He urged Rahul Gandhi to not stand in the way of much-needed structural reforms. Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the idea of ‘one nation, one election’ is an attack on the Indian Union and all its states. In response to the BJP-led Centre setting up a high-level committee to make recommendations on holding simultaneous elections, Gandhi stated that the idea is an attack on the Union and all its states. The committee will examine and recommend specific amendments to the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act for the purpose of holding simultaneous elections. It will also analyze and recommend possible solutions to scenarios such as a hung House or a no-confidence motion in case of simultaneous polls.
