Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced the mobilization of approximately 1.46 crore seedlings of 53 commercially valuable species for a large-scale plantation drive in the state. The objective behind this initiative is to set multiple world records and make a significant impact on the environment.

Out of the total seedlings mobilized, around 1.17 crore seedlings were procured through competitive bidding. As of 5th September, 2023, approximately 68 lakh seedlings have already been delivered to various Stocking Points across the state.

The plantation drive aims to contribute to the improvement of the state’s green cover, biodiversity, and overall ecosystem health. It is a part of the government’s efforts to promote sustainable development and protect the environment.

Assam is known for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. By mobilizing such a large number of seedlings, the government aims to create a positive impact on the environment and address environmental challenges such as deforestation and climate change.

The plantation drive focuses on 53 commercially valuable species, which have been carefully selected based on their economic and ecological significance. These species will help in the restoration of degraded forests and the promotion of sustainable livelihoods.

The initiative also aims to involve local communities, NGOs, and other stakeholders in the plantation process. This not only increases the participation of the public but also creates awareness about the importance of conserving nature and preserving the state’s natural resources.

Apart from setting multiple world records, the plantation drive is expected to have several long-term benefits. It will enhance the state’s climate resilience, provide a habitat for wildlife, contribute to carbon sequestration, and improve soil health.

Assam has been actively working towards preserving its natural resources and protecting its biodiversity. This plantation drive is a significant step towards achieving these goals and emphasizes the commitment of the state government towards sustainable development.

With the successful mobilization of such a large number of seedlings, Assam is positioning itself as a leader in environmental conservation. Through this plantation drive, the state intends to inspire other regions and countries to take similar initiatives for the betterment of the planet.

The plantation drive in Assam is a testament to the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges. It showcases the state’s determination to protect its natural resources, mitigate climate change, and create a sustainable future for generations to come. By setting multiple world records, Assam aims to leave a lasting legacy and pave the way for a greener and healthier planet.
