Controversial Mahisha Dasara Festival to be Celebrated on October 13

The Mahisha Dasara, a well-known festival in the Indian state of Karnataka, has been the subject of controversy and debate in recent years. The festival, celebrated on October 13, involves floral offerings to the statue of Mahishasura, a legendary demon king, located at the top of Chamundi Hills. However, this year’s event also includes a seminar focused on providing a historical perspective of Mahisha, who ruled over Mahishamandala.

The announcement about the upcoming Mahisha Dasara was made by Purushottam, the former mayor and a member of the organising committee. He stated that floral offerings would take place at 11 a.m. on October 13, but due to limited space and preparations for another festival, Naada Habba, there would be no stage function at the foothills. Instead, the seminar is scheduled to be held on October 10 at the University Fine Arts College.

The controversy surrounding the Mahisha Dasara festival arises from its historical context and the portrayal of Mahishasura as a revered figure. In the past, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had strongly opposed this celebration, leading to heated arguments between the party’s Mysuru MP, Pratap Simha, and the festival’s organisers when the BJP was in power. Despite facing opposition, the organisers remained determined to continue the event.

Purushottam expressed gratitude that the State government has given its consent to hold the celebrations, and he hoped for cooperation from the police as well. It is estimated that around 5,000 people from various areas, including Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and Hassan, will attend this year’s Mahisha Dasara.

The seminar on Mahishasura will consist of three sessions and will provide attendees with an opportunity to delve into the historical background and significance of the legendary king. Overall, the Mahisha Dasara festival remains a contentious event, attracting both supporters and opponents, and raising debates about cultural heritage and interpretation.
