Ahead of the G20 summit, PM Narendra Modi has emphasized on “taking a constructive, rather than purely restrictive approach in response to the climate crisis” and noted that a “sensitive and empathetic approach” that focuses on resource mobilisation and technology transfer can do wonders. Modi highlighted the disproportionate focus on restrictions, criticism, and blame, stating that they cannot help in tackling any challenge, especially when done collectively. Reflecting India’s approach to address the critical issues of mitigation, adaptation, and climate finance under its G20 presidency, Modi emphasized that the solution to the problem of climate change needs to be global in its scope. He called for focusing on positive actions such as energy transition, sustainable agriculture, and lifestyle transformation. According to Modi, taking responsibility and making things happen will make a difference in combating the climate crisis, whether it is done by one country or collectively. At the G20 summit, there will be a dedicated session called ‘One Earth’ that will focus on climate change. During this session, leaders are expected to discuss narrowing differences regarding the scope of gradually reducing the use of fossil fuels, enhancing climate finance, and raising renewables targets under the broader theme of energy transition. Modi stressed the need to address this issue sensitively, particularly considering the impact of the climate crisis on countries in the Global South.
