The voice of Africa and the Global South will “grow stronger” after the African Union’s inclusion in the G20, a top South African official said. Vincent Magwenya, a spokesperson for South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa said, the African Union joining the bloc signals a “very positive step” towards the reforms that have been sought in the United Nations Security Council and various global multilateral institutions. Magwenya expressed gratitude towards Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in facilitating the inclusion of the African Union in the G20. Modi’s focus on the inclusion of the Global South and smaller developing countries has been instrumental. All member countries of the G20 endorsed Modi’s proposal to invite the African Union to join the elite group. The African Union’s inclusion is seen as a significant move towards the desired reforms in the United Nations Security Council and global multilateral financial institutions. The G20, consisting of major economies, represents a significant portion of global GDP, trade, and population. The G20 summit, held in New Delhi, witnessed the African Union’s official entry into the group. The inclusion of the African Union will provide a platform for the voice of Africa and the Global South to be heard on a larger scale. This development is highly regarded by South Africa, as it will strengthen their position on global multilateral forums. President Cyril Ramaphosa is attending the summit and is expected to address the media, focusing on the expectations from the summit, including discussions on climate change and the transition towards sustainable development. India’s presidency of the G20, which started in December, will conclude on November 30, to be succeeded by Brazil.
