Volkswagen eyes job cuts on low electric-car demand

Volkswagen is considering job cuts at its plant in the eastern German city of Zwickau due to low demand for electric cars, as reported by the dpa news agency. The German carmaker plans to thin down its staff by allowing fixed-term contracts to expire, potentially affecting a few hundred employees by the end of October. Currently, over 2,000 people work at the Zwickau plant on fixed-term contracts out of a total of 10,700 employees. The plant produces six electric vehicle models from three brands under the Volkswagen Group. This decision may be a result of increasing competition from Tesla and Chinese automakers, as well as a decline in demand for electric vehicles in the European market.
