Canadian PM Trudeau Urges India to Cooperate in Murder Investigation

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has urged India to cooperate with an investigation into the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. Trudeau revealed on Monday that Ottawa had credible allegations linking Indian government agents to the murder, angering New Delhi. Canada’s traditional allies have taken a cautious stance, as they see India as a counterweight to China’s influence. The United States has confirmed its engagement with both Canada and India on the issue. India suspended new visas for Canadians and requested Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence. Trudeau did not comment on these measures. India has designated Nijjar as a ‘terrorist’ and urged Canada to share specific information about the murder. Trudeau emphasized the importance of the rule of law and protecting Canadians, asserting that India must work with Canada to uncover the truth. Meanwhile, an Indian trade official stated that Canadian pension funds should not withdraw from investing in India.
