A man wanted by authorities in India, Sukhdool Singh Gill, was found dead in Winnipeg’s Inkster Industrial area earlier this week. The specialized counter-terrorism law enforcement agency in India, the National Investigation Agency, had listed Gill on their wanted list. The Winnipeg Police Service responded to a call at a home in northwest Winnipeg and discovered Gill’s body. Police in India confirmed that Gill was an Indian citizen and had been accused of multiple crimes. The investigation into Gill’s death is currently underway. No arrests have been made in connection with his death.
Sukhdool Singh Gill, also known as Sukha Duneke, was identified as the man on the wanted list released by the National Investigation Agency via the social media platform X. Gill, 39 years old, was found dead inside a home in northwest Winnipeg on Wednesday. The cause of his death has not been disclosed, and an autopsy is pending. According to police officials in India, Gill had 18 cases against him, with nine cases still under investigation or under trial. Five cases were recorded as acquittals, one case was quashed, and there was one conviction.
Gill’s death has strained relations between Canada and India. Currently, there is increased diplomatic tension between the two countries following the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C., who had been wanted by India for years. The Indian government accused Canada of being a ‘safe haven’ for terrorists, extremists, and anti-India activities. In response, Canada’s visa application center in India suspended its services until further notice. The Canadian government has not provided any comments regarding Gill’s death. Investigations are ongoing, and both Indian and Canadian law enforcement agencies are involved.
It is worth mentioning that Sukhdool Singh Gill had no criminal record in Manitoba.
