Canada’s Opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, has publicly denounced the hateful comments directed towards Hindus in Canada, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the country. Stressing the importance of ensuring a safe and inclusive society, Poilievre expressed solidarity with the Hindu community, affirming that they will always be welcome in Canada. The condemnation comes in response to a viral video issued by Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a pro-Khalistan outfit banned in India since 2019, which threatened Hindus of Indian origin and urged them to leave the country. Poilievre took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to state, ‘Every Canadian deserves to live without fear and feel welcomed in their community. Conservatives condemn these comments against our Hindu neighbors and friends. Hindus have made invaluable contributions to every part of our country and will always be welcome here.’ These remarks from the Opposition leader arise at a time of strained relations between India and Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently alleged that the Indian government was involved in the fatal shooting of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated terrorist in India who was assassinated in Surrey, Canada, on June 18. India swiftly rejected Trudeau’s claims, deeming them absurd and motivated. As tensions escalated, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a travel advisory for Indian nationals, students residing in Canada, and those planning to travel there, advising caution. In response to the heightened situation, Canada expelled a senior Indian diplomat, reciprocating India’s expulsion of a Canadian counterpart. Meanwhile, Poilievre criticized Trudeau for providing insufficient facts and evidence regarding the allegations, emphasizing the need for transparency. The Opposition leader asserted that Canadian citizens must have access to all pertinent information to make informed judgments. Poilievre contended that without additional evidence, the allegations could be dismissed as untrue or lacking credibility. He alluded to Trudeau’s previous knowledge of foreign interference by Beijing while two Canadian citizens were held hostage by China, suggesting a contrasting response by the Canadian Prime Minister in that situation. Notably, Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party, is gaining popularity among Canadian citizens as a potential prime minister candidate. According to a recent Ipsos poll conducted for Global News, 40% of respondents favored Poilievre as the best choice for prime minister, surpassing Trudeau’s popularity. The increasing support for Poilievre signals a potential shift in government power in the upcoming 2025 elections, as Conservatives are projected to have a higher chance of forming a majority government. Poilievre’s rising momentum in polling reflects a five-point increase in favorability since last year.
