Indian-American Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has described China as an “existential threat,” not just to the United States but to the global community as a whole. During a policy address focused on the economy, Haley asserted that China is actively making preparations for potential conflict and has spent the last fifty years strategizing in order to surpass America. She also claimed that in certain aspects, the Chinese military is on par with the United States’ armed forces. Haley’s speech comes shortly after her fellow Indian-American Republican rival, Vivek Ramaswamy, delivered a foreign policy speech on China. Both Haley and Ramaswamy have gained popularity within the GOP since former US President Donald Trump. Haley emphasized that China has taken away American manufacturing jobs, trade secrets, and control of critical industries. She pointed out that China has quickly transformed from an economically backward country to the second-largest economy globally and intends to be the first. She further stated that the Chinese Communist Party is building a cutting-edge military capable of threatening the US and dominating Asia. Haley claims that China is already equal to or surpassing the US armed forces in some respects and is confident enough to send spy balloons into American skies and build a spy base off the shores of Cuba. She concluded by emphasizing that the Communist Party is preparing for war and China’s leaders intend to win.
