The shortlist of 15 films will be announced on December 21, followed by the final nominees on January 23, 2024. The winner for the best international feature film award will be revealed at the Oscars ceremony on March 10, 2024.
Hong Kong has selected Anastasia Tsang’s personal drama ‘A Light Never Goes Out’ for the international feature film category. The film tells the story of a woman who finds the strength to fulfill her late husband’s dream of making neon street signs.
Bangladesh’s submission is ‘No Ground Beneath the Feet’, a film directed by Mohammad Rabby Mridha and produced by Abu Shahed Emon. It revolves around an ambulance driver and his wife who struggle in a slowly shrinking river delta.
Sweden’s entry is ‘Opponent’, a politically sensitive drama directed by Milad Alami. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.
The United Kingdom has chosen Jonathan Glazer’s ‘The Zone of Interest’, a powerful drama depicting the horrors of the Holocaust. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received the Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Prize.
Nepal’s submission is ‘Halkara’, directed by Bikram Sapkota. It explores the employment scenario in Nepal through the eyes of a postal worker.
Italy’s entry is ‘Io Capitano’, a compelling drama by Matteo Garrone that portrays the incredible journey of two young African men from Dakar to Europe.
Spain has selected ‘Society of the Snow’ directed by J.A. Bayona, which is the first Netflix film to be chosen by the Spanish committee for the Oscars.
Egypt has submitted the dark dramedy ‘Voy! Voy! Voy!’, which had its premiere at the film’s UAE premiere in Dubai’s VOX Cinemas, Mall of the Emirates.
