Meta Unveils Facebook-Streaming Ray-Ban Smart Glasses and AI Assistant

Meta Platforms Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has introduced a new generation of Ray-Ban smart glasses that can stream directly to Facebook and Instagram, as well as new AI products and an updated virtual reality headset. These announcements were made at the Meta Connect conference, marking the company’s first in-person event since the start of the pandemic. The smart glasses, priced at $299, incorporate a new Meta AI assistant and can livestream broadcasts. The latest Quest mixed-reality headset will also soon be available for shipping. Zuckerberg emphasized that these new technologies are designed to be accessible to everyone and spoke about their entertainment and connectivity capabilities. Meta AI, the company’s assistant, will be built into the glasses and will have the ability to identify places and objects and perform language translation. Additionally, Meta is developing a platform for creating custom AI bots that can have profiles on Instagram and Facebook. The company introduced its first consumer-facing generative AI products, including the Meta AI chatbot, which can generate text responses and photo-realistic images. Zuckerberg showcased the capabilities of the AI image generator by sharing images of a dinosaur as a house pet and changing the style of his dog’s fur. These announcements illustrate Meta’s commitment to building an immersive metaverse. The event was significant for both developers, who were looking for new opportunities to create apps for Meta’s devices, and investors, who were monitoring the company’s progress in the AI space. Meta shares were down 3.8% on the day.
