Manipur announces crop compensation package for violence-affected farmers

The Manipur government has announced a crop compensation package of ₹38.06 crore for farmers affected by the recent ethnic violence in the state. According to an independent survey conducted by the farmers’ body, Loumee Shinmee Apunba Lup, around 9,719 hectares of paddy fields in the valley are at risk of crop failure due to the fear of sporadic firing from the lower foothills. The crisis has severely affected the five valley districts – Bishnupur, Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, and Thoubal, with Bishnupur being the worst affected. The agriculture commissioner of Manipur, RK Dinesh Singh, stated that the department has proposed a crop compensation package of ₹38.06 crore to the Union home ministry, and the proposal has been accepted. The department’s priority is to expedite the release of the package to the affected farmers by November. The total income loss in the agricultural sector for the state is estimated to be ₹226.50 crore. This move is expected to provide much-needed relief to the farmers and help them recover from the losses incurred due to the violence.
