Universal/Blumhouse/Morgan Creek’s latest horror offering, “The Exorcist: Believer,” hit the box office this weekend, earning an impressive $28 million in its opening weekend, according to Deadline report. While this figure falls within the range of other successful horror films like “Evil Dead” ($24.5 million), “Smile” ($22.6 million), and “The Black Phone” ($23.6 million), it stands in stark contrast to the $76.2 million opening of 2018’s “Halloween,” directed by David Gordon Green.
Given the substantial $400 million investment in the franchise, which faced increasing competition during its acquisition, this opening raises some questions.
Before marketing expenses, “The Exorcist: Believer” was made for a budget of $30 million, as per reports. On Friday alone, the film raked in $11.9 million across 3,663 theaters, including Thursday night previews that contributed $2.85 million to its total.

Reportedly, the audience reception has also been less than stellar. Critics gave the film a mere 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. CinemaScore assigned it a “C” rating, while Screen Engine/Comscore PostTrak reported an even more unfavorable audience score of 61%. The demographic breakdown shows an almost equal split between male and female viewers, with the majority falling in the 18-34 age range, specifically 24-34 (32%). Latino and Hispanic audiences led the way at 41%, followed by Caucasians at 30%, Black audiences at 13%, and 15% Asian/other.
In terms of geographical performance, “Believer” found its strongest audience presence in South Central and West regions. Furthermore, IMAX and PLF screens accounted for nearly 40% of ticket sales, with the AMC Burbank leading the charge with close to $50,000 in revenue, making it the top-performing location nationwide.
Despite the performance of “The Exorcist: Believer,” the overall weekend box office is projected to reach only $76.5 million, remaining below the $100 million mark.
