A man in his 60s, identified as G. Shanmugasundaram, was tragically trampled to death by a wild elephant near Madukkarai in Coimbatore district. The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Shanmugasundaram had been residing near the boundary of Mangalapalayam east forest for over a year on the premises of a temple. The Forest Department officials were alerted when the elephant entered human habitations in the area that evening. Unfortunately, Shanmugasundaram had a close encounter with the elephant and lost his life on the spot. The temple where he had been staying alone is situated around 150 meters from the forest boundary. The police were immediately informed, and the body was taken to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. This tragic incident highlights the need for awareness and measures to prevent human-wildlife conflicts in the region.
