Shahid Latif, a member of the militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and wanted for his role in the 2016 Pathankot attack, has been killed in Pakistan. The Pathankot attack was one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in India, targeting the Pathankot Air Force Station. Seven security personnel were martyred in the attack. Latif, who was involved in planning and executing the attack, had been on India’s most-wanted list. He was killed in an encounter with Pakistani security forces in the Sialkot district of Punjab province. The operation was carried out by Pakistan’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD). Latif’s death comes as a significant development in the fight against terrorism, particularly for India, which has been seeking justice for the victims of the Pathankot attack. The attack had strained relations between India and Pakistan and had led to a temporary suspension of dialogue between the two countries. The killing of Latif is seen as a positive step in addressing India’s concerns about cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan. India has long accused Pakistan of providing safe havens to terrorists and supporting cross-border attacks. The Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Pakistan-based militant group, is known for carrying out numerous terror attacks in India, including the Pulwama attack in 2019. The Indian government has repeatedly urged Pakistan to take decisive action against terrorist groups operating from its soil. Latif’s elimination is expected to further increase pressure on Pakistan to crack down on terrorist outfits and dismantle their infrastructure.
