Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has argued that continuous election cycles in the country are expensive. However, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has stated that simultaneous elections are not feasible and reducing the frequency of polls would be undemocratic. Tharoor referred to a study conducted by the NITI Aayog which revealed that the cost per voter would increase by Rs 5,000 if elections were not held simultaneously.
