India to Have Second Largest Metro Network in the World, Says Minister

India is set to become home to the world’s second largest metro network, as confirmed by Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs. Currently, there are 874 kilometers of metro rail operational in 20 cities across the country, with an additional 986 kilometers under construction. Puri emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening India’s urban transport network. To support the metro rail service, the cabinet has approved plans for the deployment of 10,000 electric buses on a Public-Private-Partnership model. Additionally, a ‘One Nation One Card’ facility is in the works, which will allow seamless travel through metro, bus, rail, and other public transport systems via a National Common Mobility Card.
