The West Bengal Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill 2023 was introduced in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on October 16. The Bill, introduced by Minister of State for Finance (Independent Charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya, faced suspension after just 15 minutes, with no discussions taking place. Speaker of State Assembly Biman Banerjee attributed the adjournment to the death of a former MLA. According to Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, the Governor’s consent was also lacking, as the Bill involves financial allocation and should be treated as a Money Bill. BJP MLAs criticized the introduction of the Bill during the Durga Puja festivities in the State. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had previously announced an increase in salaries for members of the West Bengal Assembly.
