Car thefts in the US are rising even though murder and non-negligent manslaughter across the country decreased, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) data. In 2022, the FBI reported an estimated 8.6% increase in vehicle thefts and an 8.1% rise in carjackings. Law enforcement agencies shared a total of 1,213,913 charges related to motor vehicle thefts, representing a 93.5% increase from the previous year. In contrast, murder and non-negligent manslaughter decreased by 6.1% and rape by 5.4%. The rise in property crime, including larceny and motor vehicle theft, aligns with reports of worsening organized retail crime. While violent crime is trending downward, the number of reported murders in 2022 remains higher than pre-pandemic levels. Crime was a major issue in the previous year’s mid-term elections, with accusations of lenience towards criminals. The FBI report also reveals an increase in carjackings and attacks on law enforcement officers.
