Motorcycle and Scooter Sales in India Set to Reclaim Pre-Pandemic Levels, Says Piaggio MD

Motorcycle and scooter sales in India are expected to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels in the next two years, according to Diego Graffi, the managing director of Piaggio. Despite weaker entry-level volumes, the strong demand for premium segment vehicles is expected to drive growth in the industry. The domestic two-wheeler industry has already recorded double-digit growth in the last fiscal year, breaking the trend of three consecutive years of decline. Graffi also mentioned that the ongoing festive season is likely to contribute to the industry’s recovery. Piaggio, the Italian automaker behind Vespa and Aprilia scooters, recently launched its first sports bike in the Indian market to cater to niche consumers in the mid-performance segment. The company believes that the midsize motorcycle segment will grow exponentially over the next decade. Sales of motorcycles with engine capacities ranging from 250cc to 750cc have already shown significant growth, surpassing the overall two-wheeler category. Royal Enfield currently dominates the mid-weight motorcycle market in India. Graffi revealed that more interventions in the midsize motorcycle segment are underway. With rising disposable income, growing preference for powerful motorcycles, improved road infrastructure, and a wider range of models available in the market, consumers are showing a greater interest in upgrading to premium offerings across motorcycles and scooters.
